Hi I’ve been using my PC as a home theatre setup for a while but only recently changed to using an AV Receiver with decent speakers. I have an AMD 6850 graphics card with its HDMI output (Windows 10, 24bit 192K in 5.1) to my Pioneer SC-LX88 which is then connected to my TV. The 5.1 speakers I have are Dali Zensor 7 for the Front, Dali Vokal for the Centre, Dali 1 for the Rear and a BK XLS400 DF for the Sub. I use MusicBee to play mp3/FLAC and this sounds amazing with 5.1 upmix selected in the preferences, the AV displays PCM when I play music and all speakers work. I use MPC-HC for video (using madVR filter which improved the video quality) and when the content is in 5.1 the AV displays DTS or Dolby Digital etc.

Sound Upmix Software [5.1 to 7.1]. From what i gather this program failed to catch on due to its. Can it upmix a 5.1 Game / movie / youtube video to 7.1? I want to clarify that this task (5.1 -> 7.1 with virtual Side channels) perfectly performed by hardware (reciever) or software decoder «Dolby Pro Logic IIx».

Here are the problems / questions I have though if anyone is kind enough to help me please? 1) In Windows Playback Devices Speaker Setup Should I have “Front Left and Right” and “Surround” ticked as Full Range or unticked? 2) When I play video in MPC-HC from a stereo audio track the AV displays “Stereo” and the audio only comes out 2.0 speakers, the front left and front right.

Is there a way to upmix this to 5.1? It sounds terrible without even the Centre or Sub working. 3) When I play anything with audio through my web browser Chrome (for example YouTube, iPlayer radio / video) this too is only output from the front left and front right speakers and the AV displays PCM.

Is there a way to upmix this to 5.1? 4) When I’m playing music through MusicBee should I use the options in preferences for 32bit output or to resample in 192K? Sorry for the long first post! I used to use a Soundblaster card that automatically upmixed everything to 5.1 on my old speakers whereas this setup seems a bit more complicated. 3) When I play anything with audio through my web browser Chrome (for example YouTube, iPlayer radio / video) this too is only output from the front left and front right speakers and the AV displays PCM. I would again let the receiver do it (esp. If you already get a stereo signal). If you set in the windows mixer that you have a stereo system, it will give the possibility for upmixing in the receiver.

But this may give issues in other programs that assume that you just have a stereo system. So not sure how to force this one. Use ADV(ADVANCED SURROUND) - to switch between the various surround modes as outlined on page 65.

Thanks, if I scroll through ADV with Stereo input from the PC over HDMI (through Chrome or a Stereo video file) the best I can get is 5.0 on the setting EXT STEREO but still not output from the Sub. The Sub works perfectly as soon as I open any 5.1 content (or play music through MusicBee which upmixes to 5.1). I even called Pioneer's helpline and they said they couldn't help as the problem wasn't with the receiver but the input, great. Are you sure you are sending the correct signal? As a test, can you try the following?

5.1 Upmix

In that windows dialog, where you choose the speaker configuration, can you set it to stereo, play back a movie in mpc hc and check the options in the receiver. Directsound, one of the standards for software to use audio devices, will always send a signal that has the amount of channels as specified in that dialog box.

If you set that one to stereo, you force the computer to send a stereo signal. If that is set to 5.1 but a stereo source plays, then the computer will output a 5.1 signal but only the front left and right channels will contain audio. So first we need to establish that you are really sending a stereo signal, not a 5.1 signal that contains just stereo: your receiver will treat that as 5.1 at refuse to upmix. There is another standard for software to use audio devices, and that one is called wasapi.

Among other things, it provides more flexibility and it bypasses that setting in the windows control panel. I have configured my mpc-hc to use wasapi and dynamically adjust the number of channels to match the source that is playing. Canzoniere scout con accordi per chitarra pdf viewer.

Edit: I reread your first post and your problem is just with mpc-hc when it plays back a stereo movie, right? If so, setting mpc-hc to upmix internally or to use wasapi (to allow the receiver to upmix) should solve the issue. Are you sure you are sending the correct signal? Stereo

I had Windows 10 sending a 5.1 signal over HDMI in Playback Devices Configure Speakers. With this option the AV Receiver couldn't upmix it no matter what settings I went through. As you suggested I changed Playback Devices Configure Speakers to Stereo instead of 5.1 in Windows. The AV Receiver now gives me a different set of settings to scroll through including Neo: X Music which upmixes the Stereo channel into 5.1 Yet when I play actual 5.1 content on the PC (even though the output is set to stereo) the AV Receiver still takes over and changes the mode to DTS-HD etc. I don't think I'd of figured out that to get 5.1 upmix on the AV I need to set Windows to Stereo, as I would have assumed that by doing that Windows would send all signals as Stereo and I'd of lost my actual 5.1 content but this isn't the case! Thanks again. Yet when I play actual 5.1 content on the PC (even though the output is set to stereo) the AV Receiver still takes over and changes the mode to DTS-HD etc.

This will only be the case if you are playing a file with bitstreaming the audio from the pc to the receiver. There may be situations where the decoding of the channels is done on the pc side, and then it will send a signal with the same number of channels as specified in that Windows dialog, with your current setting that means stereo. Also, bear in mind that for most Windows programs, you have a stereo setup, so some programs (I'm thinking games) will not use 5.1 channels now due to that setting.

To fully fix it, the best setting is to leave the Windows setting on 5.1, but instruct MPC-HC to optimize its speaker layout depending on the source material. I asked this question in this thread, and posted the answer: Basically, you need to tell MPC-HC to use a wasapi output device rather than a Directsound, but unfortunately the wasapi functionality on MPC-HC is broken. One solution is to use MPC-BE, or - what I did - install the stand alone filters from mpc-be so you have a wasapi output device available in mpc-hc.
