I am trying to figure out the best way to call grey fox. I used to trap for a living and now with that being outlawed on public land here in Arizona, I am calling a lot more than I used to. Most all of my calling had be for Coyotes in 'coyote area' using mouth calls.

I now have upgraded to a Foxpro elec. I know there are large numbers of grey fox and bobcats in the areas I will be working from trapping them in the past. My questions are 1.

Which sounds have you found the best for grey fox. Would you set up in tighter cover than normal? Any other tips you have.

I know thats a lot of questions here is what i have so far as a game plan. Call the area using 1-3 different sounds, then come back throught on my return trip the next day using 1-3 different sounds then let the area rest so to speak for a week then come back and do the same. I will keep track of sounds and stops where i was successful for future calling. I plan on trying to keep a log just like trapping always trying to add or try a few new stops each run. I have done this with coyotes over the last 5 years and it does seem to work. Do any of you do the same and what do you think about about grey fox.

I will spend 10-30 minutes on each stand depending. Longer AzTrapper. I tried two different rabbit distress Foxpro sounds for 10-15 minutes and then switched to three different coyote pup distress sounds and noticed a grey coming in from my left at the 20 minute mark. That's what worked for me with a grey. I would start with the coyote pup distress sounds and see what happens. You could probably use bird distress sounds and it would work equally well. Seems like it was curious about the sounds and I watched it for at least ten minutes before it got close enough to the sounds that it knew something wasn't right and left pretty much the same way it came in.

I MYSELF USE THE FOX PRO FX3. THE AREA I HUNT DOESNT HAVE ANY YOTES, JUST OVERLOADED WITH GRAYS, AND A FEW REDS.

I FOUND THAT JUST ABOUT ALL SMALL GAME SOUNDS WORK FOR THE GRAYS, AND THE FOX, AND PUP DISTRESS CALLS ARE ALMOST ALWAYS A FUR BAGGERS! MOST GRAYS AROUND HERE WILL CHARGE IN WITH VERY FEW HANGING UP TO CHECK THINGS OUT. THE REDS ON THE OTHER HAND SEEM TO BE MUCH MORE CLEVER. I HAVE CALLED IN APPROX 8 REDS IN THE PAST YEAR AND HAVE ONLY BEEN ABLE TO TAKE 1, THEY LIKE TO SIT AND CHECK THINGS OUT BEFORE THEY COMMIT. I HAVE BEEN VERY PLEASED WITH MY FOX PRO THUS FAR, IT WAS A LITTLE HARD SHELLING OUT THE MONEY FOR A VARMINT CALLER BUT IT HAS BEEN WELL WORTH THE MONEY. Well I got out for a while today to rty some calling and see if I could maybe get a pig as well.

The weather was great when I left the house and by the time I made the drive to my pig hunting area as well as a place I know there are Grey Fox The wind was blowing between 20-35 miles a hour. I made my first stand in a canyon that was somewhat protected from the wind and had 3 nice canyons coming into one. In years past this was a great fox trapping location. I got sit up with my decoy and call placed about 50 yards away.

I started playing Grey Fox Distress, about 10 minutes into the stand I noticed a nice little grey fox running towrds the call from a rock plie that was about 200 yards up the ridge. He entered a brush line and I never saw him again? But thats ok I saw him at least I saw him. I called another 20 minutes and nothing showed up.

I moved about 1/4-1/2 mile down this canyon to another location that I know had always held fox. I started with pursuit grey fox and changed to lighting jack after 15 minutes. Nothing but hawks and a whitetailed doe at that stop. Again I moved down the canyon about a 1/2 mile to the next stand and put out the decoy and started with Greyfox distress at about the 5 minute mark I noticed movement coming in. It turned out to be 2 coyotes both were light colored so I dropped one at about 30 yards and didn't get a shot at the second. I left the call running and the second one stopped at about 150 yards so I added that to my day. After dragging and carrying those two back to the truck My back told me that was it so I took a break for a couple of hours and disided to try one more stand then head home.

The last stand I made was about 2:30 in the afternoon I played a woodpecker distress sound with no luck. But things are picking up at least I saw a Grey fox today and thats always good.
