I also have this error very often (90%) when giving videos to play through command line arguments. With two consecutive launch of vlc with same arguments, result is not always the same (from times to times the error does not appen). I am using a debian etch system with vlc-0.9.0-git (currently one from today, 2008-04-15). When I tried to locate the error with gdb, the error does not append and everything works fine using gdb. Except for one time when this error occurs under gdb. But the vlc child process goes to Zombie status and I am unable to get gdb prompt.
